The term "chocolate fountain" may conjure strange images of a block of chocolate carved into an intricate fountain. After all, a "chocolate bunny" is simply a bunny-shaped hunk of milk chocolate, more of a novelty than a coveted confection. Ditto for the chocolate coin. But, where the chocolate bunny and the chocolate coin are exemplary items of camp and kitsch, the chocolate fountain is nothing short of an elegant centerpiece for almost any occasion. The chocolate fountain is, in fact, a mechanical fountain used for chocolate fondue. Most are circular in design with concentric round tiers that create the beautiful effect of cascading melted chocolate. |
The fountain works by melting a large portion (up to 25 lbs. in many models) of "couverture" chocolate. The term couverture means the chocolate contains a higher concentration of cocoa butter, making the chocolate melt more easily and uniformly, as well as making it flow through the fountain more elegantly. The chocolate is melted in the basin then forced upward by an auger or pump. The chocolate then flows beautifully down the tiers, allowing partygoers to dip fruit, nuts, pretzels or whatever they desire into the streaming chocolate.
Chocolate fountains are a popular attraction at wedding receptions, Bar Mitzvahs, and many other events. Their beautiful, elegant presentation creates an eye-catching centerpiece to any reception hall or home. It is not uncommon to hear a lot of ooohs and ahhhs as guests get their first glimpse of the flowing chocolate.
More importantly, they provide guests with a delicious and fun dessert that makes a great conversation starter.
