Fondue Etiquette

If you are new fondue parties, or you are simply trying to brush up on your dipping manners, here are a few tips for the next time you're mingling around the fondue pot.

Fon-Do's

  • Fondue pots are usually held at about 200 degrees, so be sure to let your fondue cool slightly after you have dipped your treat in the fondue pot.
  • Always use a skewer or fondue fork for dipping. You may be tempted to dip a piece of bread into the fondue pot just using your hands. Not only can you burn yourself doing this, but it is also unsanitary.
  • Always gently twirl whatever you have dipped so the cheese coats it. This will also prevent any cheese from dripping off the morsel as you try to eat it.
  • If you are using bread for your fondue, always select a crusty piece. The crust will help keep the bread on the fork, and it is less likely to fall into the fondue pot.

Fon-Don't's

  • Never "double-dip." This is a long-standing rule of party etiquette, and it is no different for a fondue party.
  • Never blow on your fondue fork to cool it down. It is best to let it cool naturally for a moment. Blowing on your fondue can cause cheese to splatter on other partygoers.
  • Never let your teeth or lips touch the fondue fork. If you are having trouble with this, use a second fork to remove the morsel from your fork and place it on a plate.
